[Use of a hybrid external fixator for treatment of tibial fractures].
J Zeman, J Matejka
Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2005; 72(6):337-343
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The study deals with treatment of the articular ends of the tibia, using a hybrid external fixator. A group of patients treated in the years 2001-2003 is retrospectively evaluated.MATERIAL: Between 2001 and 2003, 21 patients (16 men and 5 women) with a fracture of either the distal or the proximal end of the tibia were treated, using a Synthes external hybrid fixator, at the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Plzen. The average age of the patients was 49.2 years. The fractures, evaluated by the AO classification, included five type A3 fractures and 16 type C1 or C2 fractures....
[Complications of internal fixation by a short proximal femoral nail].
T Pavelka, J Matejka, H Cervenková
Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2005; 72(6):344-354
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The article presents analysis of complications of the treatment of unstable fractures of the proximal femur by the proximal femoral nail (PFN Synthes).MATERIAL: Between October 1997 and October 2003, 239 patients were treated for unstable fractures of the proximal femur, 89 men and 150 women, average age 71 years. The minimum follow-up was 12 months. Unstable was considered a fracture in which it was impossible to restore by reduction the medial support -- the Adams' arch, i. e. the region below the lesser trochanter in subtrochanteric fractures. Prevailing in the group of patients were unstable pertrochanteric fractures (AO...
[Metaphyseal fibrous defect].

Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2005; 72(6):355-362
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to identify predisposition to the development of metaphyseal fibrous defect (MFD) on the skeleton and to select appropriate imaging methods and examination for detection of atypically located or larger cortical lesions.MATERIAL: A group of 38 randomly selected patients with MFD was analyzed. It comprised of 27 boys and 11 girls at average ages of 13.7 years and 15.5 years, respectively. The youngest child was 4 and the oldest patient was 30 years old.METHODS: Thirty-two patients with a history of trauma and six patients with problems associated with sports activities were examined by plain radiography....
[Varus supracondylar osteotomy of the femur -- long-term results].
M Pach, M Uvízl, R Holibka, J Zapletalová
Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2005; 72(6):363-370
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Varus supracondylar osteotomy of the femur is the surgical procedure indicated in young patients with symptomatic unicompartmental gonarthrosis associated with a valgus knee deformity. The aim of the study was to evaluate long-term results and to draw attention to the most frequent mistakes in the indication and surgical technique.MATERIAL: In the period from 1985 to 1995, 35 knees in 33 patients were treated by varus supracondylar osteotomy of the femur in the Department of Orthopedics, Teaching Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Palacký University in Olomouc. The technique of medial closing wedge osteotomy of the distal femur...
[Rupture of the pectoralis major muscle -- causes, diagnosis, treatment].
P C Strohm, T A Bley, N P Südkamp, W Köstler
Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2005; 72(6):371-374
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Between 01/02 and 01/03 four cases of ruptures of the pectoralis major muscle were treated in our hospital by suture. The data were retrospectively analysed, all patients underwent a follow up examination. We compared our results with the literature found by internet search.PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 01/02 and 01/03 four male patients with a rupture of the pectoralis major muscle (PM) were treated surgically by suture. Three of them had an acute rupture (75%), in one case the injury was older (25%). In three cases patients underwent MRI examination. All patients were examined for a follow up by the Constant score and the...
Quantification of changes in graft dimension after corrective osteotomy of the distal end of the radius.
R Bilić, J Kovjanić, R Kolundzić
Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2005; 72(6):375-380
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This is a cross section retrospective study which shows undertaken in order to determine the frequency and degree of postoperative alterations in size of cortico-cancellous autografts used in corrective osteotomies of the distal radius.PATIENTS AND METHOD: In the period from 1987 to 2002, 50 patients (21 females and 29 males, mean age 38 years, range 18-64, were treated with corrective osteotomy, bone grafting and internal fixation after mal-united Colles' fracture. The patients were followed up from 6 months to 5 years (average 15 months). Heights of volar, ulnar, dorsal and radial sides of the graft were determined from...
[Our experience with repair of the scapholunate ligament using the MITEK bone anchor].
J Pilný, J Kubes, I Cizmár, P Visna
Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2005; 72(6):381-386
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: A complete rupture of the scapholunate (SL) interosseal ligament results in palmar flexion of the scaphoid and dorsiflexion of the lunate that leads to disintegration of the carpal circle and the development of scapholunate dissociation with dorsal intercalary segment instability. If the injury is not treated properly or early, the abnormal position of the scaphoid and lunate results in degenerative changes of the wrist shown by X-ray and referred to as scapholunate advanced collapse (SLAC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of our method used for reconstruction of the SL ligament by means of MITEK bone anchors...
[Purulent arthritis of the spinal facet joint].
P Sebesta, J Stulík, J Kryl, T Vyskocil
Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2005; 72(6):387-389
Purulent arthritis of the facet joint is a rare affection. It occurs most commonly by hematogenous spread of microorganisms and the initiating agent is in most cases Staphylococcus aureus. Diagnosis is made predominantly by means of MRI and hemocultures, or culture of pus aspirated from the abscess with a needle. Conservative therapy consists in a long-term administration of antibiotics. In case of insufficient response to the treatment or development of a neurological deficit, the patient is indicated for surgical revision, drainage and, if necessary, for decompression of nerve structures. In addition to sepsis, a severe complication of the purulent...
