PURPOSE OF THE STUDYThe study aims to quantify the costs of a hospital stay of patients with total knee periprosthetic joint infection throughout the period of treatment.MATERIAL AND METHODSThe group included patients who have been treated at our department for infection as a complication of total knee replacement since 1 January 2011, who have been provided with treatment (including complications) exclusively at the departments of Nemocnice České Budějovice, a.s. and whose treatment can be considered completed in 2018. The patients were included in the study regardless of the type of infection and method of treatment. The group consisted...

Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2019; 86(3):181-187 | DOI: 10.55095/achot2019/027
PURPOSE OF THE STUDYRevision surgery with implant retention and exchange of mobile prosthetic parts is considered to be the method of first choice in acute periprosthetic infections with a stable endoprosthesis and good condition of soft tissues, where the symptoms did not last longer than 3 weeks. The aim of the study was to evaluate the long-term outcomes and to identify the factors affecting the success rate of this procedure.MATERIAL AND METHODSThis unicentric retrospective study evaluated the results of 18 surgeries with implant retention performed at the Department of Orthopaedics of České Budějovice Hospital in the period 2009-2016....

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYWith the ageing of population the vertebral insufficiency fractures are increasing in number and occur ever more frequently. Symptomatic relief is often difficult to achieve by non-operative treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the level of pain relief and functional outcomes in patients who failed initial non-operative treatment and, because of persisting or growing symptoms, underwent kyphoplasty.MATERIAL AND METHODSTotal number of 303 patients who underwent balloon kyphoplasty between January 2011 and December 2016 were included in our study. These 303 patients had 357 surgeries. This is a retrospective...

Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2019; 86(3):193-198 | DOI: 10.55095/achot2019/029
PURPOSE OF THE STUDYTo evaluate hand function deficiency in patients with Dupuytren's disease (DD) in addition to assessing the improvement of function after palmar fasciectomy by using different hand-related questionnaires.MATERIAL AND METHODSA total of 121 hands (95 patients) underwent surgery. Disease severity was designated using Tubiana's Staging System. The Tendency of changes of Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire (DASH), Patient Evaluation Measure (PEM), and Hand Function Score (HFS) scores of patients with DD undergoing palmar fasciectomy were assessed prior to, 3 months after, and 1 year after the operation....

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYAnkle fractures are characterised by a high variability of damage to bone and ligament structures which leads to diverse clinical conditions. This study aims to analyse a group of patients with surgically treated ankle fractures, with a focus on evaluating the outcomes of treatment of ankle joint medial structure injuries (medial malleolar fracture, ligament lesions).MATERIAL AND METHODSThe analysed group included 186 patients (102 men and 84 women), in whom an ankle fracture surgery was performed in 2015 and 2016. The outcomes of the treatment were evaluated in 111 patients with type B and type C fractures, who underwent...

Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2019; 86(3):205-211 | DOI: 10.55095/achot2019/031
PURPOSE OF THE STUDYPeriprosthetic distal femoral fractures (PDFF) constitute an unpleasant complication in patients with a total knee replacement (TKR). The incidence reported in literature is 0.3-2.5 %. The number of periprosthetic knee fractures has been increasing due to the ageing of population, a growing number of implants, a longer life expectancy of patients, a more intensive physical activity of patients, and osteoporosis. Most of these fractures are treated surgically, non-surgical treatment is reserved solely for patients unable to undergo a surgery for general health conditions.MATERIAL AND METHODSOur retrospective study evaluated...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYThe plantar calcaneal spur (inferior calcar calcanei) is a frequent source of foot pain. The study presents the results of calcaneal spur excision by open surgery. It covers the indication, surgical approach, postoperative care, and presents the results reported at least one year after the surgery.MATERIAL AND METHODSThe group consists of 42 heel spurs in 41 patients operated on in the period 2000-2016. The mean age was 44.5 years, with the age range 37-75 years. In 18 cases the surgery was performed on the right side, in 24 cases on the left side, the group was composed of 24 women and 17 men. Difficulties were suffered...

Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2019; 86(3):220-222 | DOI: 10.55095/achot2019/034
A 34-year-old worker suffered electrical burns on his head and right hand caused by the contact with a 380 V power source. He was unconscious, intubated, hospitalised at the ICU, and later he woke up. The entry wound was on the right hand and the exit wound on the head. These factors resulted in an extensive deep mutilating defect of the right fronto-orbital region. This article describes the management and surgical treatment of this interesting case of burn injury.

The author presents a case study of the use of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion (REBOA) as a suitable alternative to thoracotomy and clamping of the descending aorta to control retroperitoneal bleeding in a patient with a pelvic injury. The patient who suffered multiple trauma after car accident, type C pelvic injury and retroperitoneal bleeding among other things, was following the pre-hospital ambulance care transported to the department of emergency medicine, with catecholamine infusion to support the blood flow. After the primary survey following the ATLS principles, the patient was taken for a CT scan. The CT examination revealed...
