PURPOSE OF THE STUDYTo evaluate the long-term results of intramedullary nailing of extra-articular proximal humerus fractures.MATERIAL AND METHODSThirty-six patients with 36 extra-articular fractures, types 11-A2 and 11-A3, treated by intramedullary nailing were reassessed after an average follow-up of 54 (30-86) months. The group included five type 11-A2 and 31 type 11-A3 fractures according to the AO/OTA classification. Radiographic and clinical outcomes - the absolute Constant score (CSabs) and the relative Constant score (compared to the contralateral side, CSrel) were evaluated. The rate of complications was assessed.RESULTSAll...

Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2013; 80(3):208-215 | DOI: 10.55095/achot2013/033

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYA retrospective analysis of complications associated with surgical treatment of pelvic ring fractures.MATERIALBetween 2004 and 2011 a total of 257 patients with pelvic ring fractures, 176 men and 81 women with an average age of 36 years, were treated. The average follow-up was 53 months (range, 13 to 108 months). AO type C fractures, which were most frequent, were recorded in 67%, type B fractures in 30% and type A fractures in 3% of the patients. Displaced unstable fractures or markedly displaced type A fractures of the pelvic ring were indicated for surgery.RESULTSThree types of complications were distinguished,...

Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2013; 80(3):216-218 | DOI: 10.55095/achot2013/034

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYIn this study we evaluated the effect of warm bupivacaine on the onset time of sensory block in patients undergoing lower limb surgery with epidural anaesthesiaMETHODSAfter approval by the Ethics Committee and written informed consents, 60 ASA physical status I and II patients, aged 18 to 75 years, undergoing elective lower limb surgery were studied in this randomized double-blind clinical trial. The patients having spinal anesthesia were divided into two groups. Group 1 received warm bupivacaine and group 2 was given bupivacaine at room temperature. The onset time and the level of sensory block were evaluated by a blind...

Acta Chir Orthop Traumatol Cech. 2013; 80(3):219-225 | DOI: 10.55095/achot2013/035

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYThe primary aim of the study was to identify characteristics predicting the blood loss associated with primary total hip (THA) and knee (TKA) arthroplasty surgery. The other objective was to find out which characteristics were important for peri-operative allogeneic blood transfusion in the same group of patients.MATERIAL AND METHODSThis prospective study comprised 210 consecutive patients who underwent primary THA (n = 115) or primary TKA (n = 95) at our department. In each patient, 21 pre-operative and peri-operative characteristics were recorded. Of them, the following characteristics were selected for statistical...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYThe purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical and functional results for a series of patients undergoing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) at mid-term follow-up.MATERIAL AND METHODSThis study included 32 patients with isolated medial compartment arthritis who underwent unilateral UKA. Outcomes were assessed using pre- and postoperative Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores and Knee Society Score (KSS) metrics.RESULTSOn physical examination at a follow-up of at least 5 years, mean knee flexion was 121° , mean knee extension was 2°, and mean varus angulation was 2°....

The extremities continue to be the most frequent sites of wounding during armed conflicts despite the change of combat tactics, soldier armour and battlefield medical support. Due to the advances in prehospital care and timely transport to the hospital, orthopaedic surgeons deal with severe and challenging injuries of the limbs. In contrast to civilian extremity trauma, the most combat-related injuries are open wounds that often have infection-related complications. Data from two recent large armed conflicts (Iraq, Afghanistan) show that extremity injuries are associated with a high complication rate, morbidity and healthcare utilization. A systematic...
