PURPOSE OF THE STUDYTo evaluate a possible association between hip fracture and statin use.MATERIAL AND METHODSIn this case-control study we compared the use of statins between two groups of 210 patients: the first group (case group) included patients hospitalized for hip fractures while the second group (control group) included patients who did not suffer femur bone injuries. The two groups were matched for age, sex, year of hospitalization and possible confounding factors. Inside the group of cases, we also evaluated the differences in terms of fracture type, presence of previous fragility fracture and mortality between statin users and...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYTo compare the outcomes of parallel and convergent iliosacral screw insertion into the body of vertebra S1 in the treatment of posterior pelvic arch injuries.MATERIAL AND METHODSRadiographs of 120 patients (43 women, 77 men), aged between 14-79 years, treated with iliosacral screw fixation for posterior pelvic ring fractures between 1.1.2009 and 31.12.2019 were reviewed for inclusion in the study. In each case two screws were inserted into the body of vertebra S1. The screws were inserted in either parallel or convergent orientation. Convergent orientation allows the threads of both screws to be interconnected. In this...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYAcromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation and its surgical treatment still raises a number of questions that remain to be answered. In some types of dislocations, Rockwood type III in particular, the indication for surgical treatment as such is relative. There are numerous techniques and implants available for the reconstruction of AC joint. In our research we focused on the necessity of coracoclavicular (CC) joint reconstruction.MATERIAL AND METHODSIn this paper, a cohort of 56 patients with Rockwood type III AC joint injury who underwent surgical treatment at our department in 2010-2016 period was retrospectively evaluated....

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYIn clinical practice UHMWPE is the most commonly used material for manufacturing articular components of joint replacements. The purpose of this study is to find out whether repeated ethylene oxide sterilization results in oxidative degradation of UHMWPE or not and also whether the oxidative degradation of various types of ethylene oxide-sterilized UHMWPE depends on storage time or not.MATERIAL AND METHODSThe set included 12 samples of UHMWPE (three samples with different modifications (virgin PE, with E vitamin and cross-linked with thermal treatment) and different number of sterilizations (0×-3×)). The set also included...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYTreatment of nonunion of humerus continues to be a matter of debate. For this purpose, many treatment methods have been reported. The aim of this retrospective cohort study is to evaluate the results of patients who underwent revision surgery with compressive intramedullary nailing implemented a single type of surgical technique in aseptic humeral nonunions without bone defects.MATERIAL AND METHODSData of 15 patients with humerus nonunion, all were treated with compressive intramedullary nailing between 2000 and 2019 were retrospectively evaluated. Three patients were hypertrophic and 12 were atrophic types. The mean...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYRadiographs are preferred for understanding the deformity and containment in Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD), as well as for treatment planning, but plain radiographs provide only static information and are inadequate for dynamic assessment of the joint. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to be superior to other diagnostic modalities. The aim of this study was to determine the importance of hip MRI in LCPD treatment decision-making processes between pediatric orthopedic surgeons and orthopedic surgery residents.MATERIAL AND METHODSEight orthopedic surgery residents and eight pediatric orthopedic surgeons...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYAs in orthopedic trauma patients, a hyperinflammatory response due to cytokine release occurs in patients with moderate and severe COVID-19 infection. In these patients, untimely surgical intervention can create more destructive situations in the postoperative period. Our aim in this study was to investigate the effect of COVID-19, trauma and surgical intervention on acute phase reactants' levels in patients with and without COVID-19 infection.MATERIAL AND METHODSTwenty-four patients diagnosed with COVID-19 infection and major fractures requiring surgical treatment were evaluated retrospectively (Group 1). Twenty-four...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYMost common postoperative treatment recommendations after acetabulum fractures suggest at least 6 weeks of postoperative partial or non weight-bearing. To protect the osteosynthetic construct this surgically set weight-bearing limit is trained by physical therapy. Aim of our analysis was to determine the free field patient compliance to these weight-bearing restrictions and observe their influence on the early postoperative radiographic imaging.MATERIAL AND METHODSPatients after surgical treatment of an acetabulum fracture were included in our analysis. Every patient was instructed to maintain a 20 kg weight-bearing...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDYCementless stems in highly dysplastic hips are considered to increase the risk of femoral fracture and associated morbidity. Several authors speculated to use prophylactic cabling in this patient group to prevent intraoperative fractures. This study aims to reveal objective results regarding the perioperative complications in a large and consecutive patient group with respect to use of prophylactic cabling.MATERIAL AND METHODSA retrospective comparative study was planned. A total of 122 consecutive patients with dysplastic hips of Crowe type 3 or 4, operated on with total hip arthroplasty (THA) and shortening osteotomy...

Coccygodynia, or tailbone pain, is the most common in women after trauma (complicated childbirth, fall). This pain can be treated conservatively (by using analgesics, local injections, physiotherapy) or by surgical coccygectomy. In the presented article, a set of five female patients is evaluated, in whom, after the failing conservative therapy, coccygectomy was indicated for persistent coccygodynia. In all female patients, improvement of their clinical condition and alleviation of pain were reported. Coccygectomy has its place in the management of coccygodynia and in correctly chosen patients significant pain reduction can be expected.

Open pelvic fractures are devastating injuries with high mortality and morbidity that require aggressive treatment and multidisciplinary approach to achieve the best results. We present three cases of open pelvic fracture with a Faringer I zone injury, which were treated at our level I trauma centre in 2020. The patients were treated with external fixation without the need for fecal diversion. None of the patients died. Early control of bleeding, appropriate treatment of soft tissues and prevention of fecal contamination are critical for the treatment of patients with open pelvic fractures. A multidisciplinary approach relying on an experienced and...
